SIEG SX3.5Z Drivers EtherCAT A6 Steppers was created by juan13372k
Hello,

i bought this Sieg Typ Mill SX 3.5 from Paulimot in Germany. I now need to buy Steppers and Drivers.
This is the Mill:  sieg-sx3.5z i bought the mill with glas scales and i like to implement them in the driver if possible?

I am thinking of getting the following Driver and Steppers, if this makes sense:   400-w-ethercat-ac-servomotor-kit
it would be nice if the experts can give me a feedback because iam quit new to this topic.
thank you

You can use glass scales instead of the servo's encoder. BUT.
The driver must interface to the glass scales. And that is most likely the problem.
I'm guessing the glass scales uses incremental quadrature signal.
In the product listing it's mentioned 17-bit absolute encoder.
That's not the same and will not work.
You must check the capabilities of the drive, if it can accept incremental quadrature signal.
If it can do that, there is a big chance it will work.
Summary:
- Check interface of the glass scales
- Check that the drive can use that.

No, but you can use them with LinuxCNC and leave the drives as they are.
You would need a Mesa 7i95T board as it has step/dir outputs and encoder inputs so the glass scales would be wired to those encoder inputs.
There are other combinations of Mesa boards, like 7i96S with 7i85 etc, but first make sure the glass scales can be wired to normal incremental encoder inputs.

Okay i see so i dont get away with a cheap stepper driver like those from steppersonline.
I need one which has real closed loop capability. Like  leadshine el8  I mean this is a total different price class :(
I wonder if it makes sense on a cheap chines benchmill... Probably not my bad I bought the mill with the glass scales.

The leadshine el8 has this external encoder plug. This cheap chines glass scales have only VGA plug.

The question also would be if the glass scales provide the right signal via the cabel for the stepperdriver.

Has anybody have experience with that?

why not get a kit of closed loop steppers and use them with say a 7i97t in velocity mode. or use a 7i96s and add an encoder board later.
Then you might be able to get your scales going in position mode at your leisure and have a dual feedback system.
But I have a similar Seig SX3 and it may be overkill for what it is. A friend has an early Syil CNC machine which is based on a SX3.... open loop steppers and he does some really intricate stuff.

Yes that sound more reasonable thanks for that info I wanted to go by ethercad to have a small HMI PC for Linux CNC but if mesa card makes more sense sure than I go that way.

Can you maybe give me some info what to look for I need a computer with PCi port and the the card is the driver or do I need extra drivers and than the stepper motors ?

Maybe someone can recommend me a setup :) that would be nice thanks so far for the help I really appreciated it

You will probably find a 7i96s is cheaper in the end but there is a lot more wiring to do. Ethercat encoders are expensive and probably difficult to configure if you can't close things on the drive. Either way, try to get an Intel NIC. The balance probably falls in favour of Mesa if you can get away with a 7i96s

Okay i where talking a little bit with chatgpt :D

my recomendation from chatgpt is something like that:
  • 1x Mesa Electronics 7i95T 6-Axis STEP/DIR/Encoder Ethernet Controller (Chatgpt said this is better version?)
  • 3x Leadshine CS-D808 30-80 V 8 A
  • 3x Leadshine Closed Loop Schrittmotor mit 8Nm Typ: CS-M23480
My question would be, is 8Nm Torque for the Z-Axis enough because i think the head is quite heavy and i think there is no counter weight
or should i get a bigger motor for the Z-Axis?
  • 1x Closed Loop Schrittmotor Leadshine ES2-MH342120 mit 12,0 Nm
  • 1x Closed Loop Schrittmotor-Endstufe Leadshine ES-DH2306 für 230VAC

Hi,
