Hey, just bought this item: wegstr.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=50

They say it's compatible with Mach 3 and some UC100 controller. And mach 3 works with XP or windows 2000.

The question is what exactly do I need to run this on Laptop through USB with LinuxCNC? Many thanks.

It is not possible to control anything with LinuxCNC and USB. USB is not a suitable interface for the LinuxCNC design. (USB introduces timing inconsistency)
The USB devices that Mach3 can use move all the real-time control elements into the USB device.

However, it appears that the Machine has a 25-pin D-connector, so there are a number of other options available.
The simplest would be to use a different PC which has a parallel port. That would be very nearly plug-and-play with LinuxCNC (or with Mach3).

LinuxCNC _does_ support machine control through the Ethernet port. This means that you could use store.mesanet.com/index.php?route=produc...83_85&product_id=306

As a bonus, it is rather cheaper than a USB Smoothstepper.

Yes, this have 25pin connector and I wonder would it world with rs232 as I have old laptop which has one of these. If I remember correctly very old computers used rs232 used 25pin connectors. I can see there are adopters for them in my local shop.

No.

The interface is individual step-dir pulses on each pin of the connector for each motor. It isn't really a data interface of any sort.

USB to Parallel won't work with LinuxCNC.
