Hi ...
I want schow you my reterofit i builed in my work.
my boss allowed my to retrofit our old drill machine after the servodrive was broken.
i use a mesa5i25-7i76 combo with 201mm nema 42 steppermotors.
it works great and now we can mill everthing...
thanks to fernv and the forum here and all people from linuxcnc....

I am not sure that I would have even considered stepper motors on a machine that size.
How does the performance compare to with the servos?

before the machine get my retrofit it works one servomotor with one servo drive on all axes...with some electric clutch the machine moved the different axis but still one at the same time..
The servo drive had 6.5 kw and 25 N.M.
Now I use stepper in nema42 size with about 23 N.M one at all 4 axis.
The belt drive have 7:1 transmission and the ball screw is 8 mm pitch
before with the heidenhain tc124 we can move 1300mm per minute now tree time faster.
But its dangerous to loos steps.
I limited the movement to 2000 mm per minute and its possible to make pockets with + - 0.04 mm tolerant.
without loosing stepps or somthing other faults.
nice greedings

A closed-loop stepper system of the same size should be a drop-in replacement, and would be able to signal a fault on overload (though they have some chance of recovering lost steps)
An example, not a recommendation:
