If you are in the UK, possibly: www.machine-dro.co.uk/high-accuracy-magnetic-linear-tape.html

Thanks for both suggestions, I was looking at optical only, but magnetic seems to be just as good, and may be a better fit for integrating into my machine.
Do people know of US suppliers for 1mm pole length magnetic strip? I'll need about 40omm total length, and prefferably 5mm wide.

AMS AS5311 magnetic encoder. 488 micron resolution in SSI serial mode, x4 for incremental (under 2 micron). you can buy the dev mini board from mouser or direct from AMS for $20ish.
Bogen makes the adhesive backed tape, can be had in 40/10/3 micron/m precision. 40 micron comes in a roll, 10 and 3 are in 1m strips. you can call bogen usa direct to buy small quantities. my 10 micron strips were about $60 a metre. 3 micron isnt worth the extra money i dont think, at least not with the ams readers. the bogen tape is used with renishaw readers as well, used on many high end cnc's (dont ask me why they charge so much on those machine, the bogen guy doesnt know either)
drawback to the ams reader is that youll need to make some form of mounting block / housing. but if you have a cnc machine already, its easy.
i have not yet used mine, i intend them to go on my brothers.

Yes, i've been looking at the AS5311, to go on a custom PCB with the end stop opto-sensors to mount within the X-Y carriage of the Proxxon MF-70 mill. The AS5311 is 1.95um incremental resolution (usual assumptions) according to the datasheet. $11ea for the bare chips on mouser.
The DRO-MG-TP-05-HA tape is the 'machine DRO' product and i had an email back from them that it is 2mm pole pitch, so 1mm spacing so should work fine. available in the UK from machine DRO and from sra-measurement in the US. Looks like the best bet at $70/m or GBP50/m in the UK.

that tape is 20 micron precision, for more money than the bogen 10 micron. just to point out.

I'll order the sra product as i only need 400mm total (its a small machine) and Bogen have a $100 minimum order plus shipping.
