the first steps are the hardest to get
but you are well in the line of going the right way
dont forget to bridge the gnd to the different cabinets
the high step uses a chargepump as i recall

				Charge pump needed?
I don't think I can disable the need for charge pump in my controller. I'm hoping that I can get this output from the 7i96.

if you rewire the intirer cabinet woudt be mutch better in times of E-safty then going to the Bord that the machine got
also you benefit the most from Hardwarestepping direct from Mesa to Driver
i guess you are going to wire from Hardware to analog HCT chips inside the Machine dont go that way

@bbsr_5a I don't quite understand. I might have been unclear on my setup.
LNCNC "talks to" 7i96 via ethernet
7i96 is connected with my HighZ controller (www.cnc-step.com/5-channel-stepper-motor-controller/)
The HighZ controller is wired to the steppers, etc. I actually don't know whats in that cabinet besides motor drivers. The HighZ controller also outputs 0-10V for my spindle if I give it a PWM signal, hence the 4+1 configuration of my 7i96.
Now I fear that I cannot get a charge pump signal out of the 7i96. There might be some possibilities (I' totally guessing).
- Somehow configure the 7i96 to 3+1+1
- Or maybe get a charge pump signal out of the expansion connection?

I liked cnc-step a lot, they make some nice machines for nice prices, i do not even mind that they used my idea for an engraving head, at least they did a much better job of implementing that idea, but i do mind them saying the machine has 10 microsteps, it does not, it has divider by 10, so for 9 steps the machine does nothing. Looks like they are using Gecko drives, they are pretty nice, but again no microstepping and they are way overrated for voltage.
Back on topic,
If you have all 5 step/dir outputs used, the only solution for the charge pump is to use the header I/O, and that would most probably need modified firmware, so might want to wait for PCW to answer that.

Cool. Yes, the engraving head works great. I didn't use it much though, and now it's unusable because my retrofit with another spindle and a custom z-plate.
I currently only have 3 axis. I'll probably never get around to implement a fourth axis, so I suppose, theoretically, I could use step03 as charge pump. Would I need another firmware for this? Do you know if such firmware exists?

				Thanks again.
I hope I'll get some answers on this. Best solution seems to be a 3+2 firmware.
In the meantime I'd like to go on with the configuration. Without charge pump I can do nothing. Do you know how the HAL code would look for using step04 as charge pump?
I suppose I'd have to define a frequency and enable it. How do I know what frequency I need? I've read 10 kHz in this forum. The Smoothstepper FAQ says 12.5 kHz. warp9td.com/index.php/faq#ChargePump
