CNC camshaft grinder DIY project was created by Juxus
Hi all,

I am Juxus from Germany and building my first LinuxCNC project: a camshaft grinder. The mechanics are almost done - now it is time to setup the Mesa 7i96s and LinuxCNC. Laptop (Lenovo T450s) is setup and exclusively for operating the machine.

The idea is to run the A axis with an encoder for turning the camshaft and Y axis for positioning the cam against the grinding wheel. X Axis is to positioning the second cam after the first one is done.

I am a total beginner with LinuxCNC and I am thankful for all hints!

Thanks!
Juxus

Change the couplers between the lead screw and stepper motor. They can wind under load and tear themselves apart.

Looks good so far.

I am super curious about that.
You might consider a more narrow grinding wheel. Then you can traverse the x-Axis. I think this might improve surface finish.

I also would add a tailstock support on the end of the cam shaft. It will improve things, worth the effort.

Edit: I would first try to get x-y-z and rotation running. Then try some simple cylindrical grinding to get a feel for the machine and surface finishes.

Please keep reporting how things go.
