An interesting discussion, I've used FreeCad for a while for 3D printing.  Most of the machining I do is too simple to demand intervention by CAD so far :-)

If people want information on some interesting concepts in FreeCad, here are some YouTube channels that might interest:

www.youtube.com/@CADCAMLessons/videos

There are others, but I don't want to make this too lengthy :-)

Did all this and some more 2 days ago while i was building a small 4 axis cnc machine and waiting for it's parts to print (not shown here, but the round teethed thing shown here is also for that machine).
Notice the changes on the FreeCAD GUI, made it much more enjoyable to use

If you are already here, you should really watch this, it is by far the most comprehensive video for complicated and parametric stuff.

I've been using FreeCAD for the last year as I learn CAD and now CAM. Its been a pretty good experience for me, I dont understand all the hate from the larger internet. I just chock it up to not learning any other CAD package first (unless you count Kicad).
Its been pretty cool watching it move to V1 and now beyond. It looks like CAM gets some good updates in V1.1. I might need to try the dev version one of these days.

FOSS projects will always get hate. Admittedly there were some really frustrating things. It is getting better & better.

Haven't been on the forum for a while ... I use FreeCAD quite frequent and I am active in the FC forum. It has done major leaps forward with the 1.0 release. TNP is not fully solved, but much better. Yes, FreeCAD requires patience to learn, has a steep learning curve and you need to be aware of its traps. But it has become a very powerful CAD/CAM/FEM/... package. Du to its Python capability and functional openness, you can do wild things using Python and if needed, program it to your needs (incl. the CAM side). I am coming from the Sketchup and Fusion side, and switched to FreeCAD. I still use Sketchup to design and build furniture (also tables, benches etc. for my job shop, also did my exterior and interior house design with it), but for all the mechanical stuff I switched to FreeCAD (incl. CAM). For electronic stuff I use KiCAD, but compared to FreeCAD quite seldom.
