Is my wire diagram correct? was created by Haugud
Hi, completely new to CNC here.
I'm gonna build my first hobby CNC and is trying to figure everything out.
My controller will be a Mesa 7i96 and I'm a bit uncertain if my wire diagram is correct.
Should the GND to the limit switches come from the PSU or COM from input on controller, or are they the same?
Also should the controller side of the estop be NO or NC?
Is the output of the controller a potential-free relay, so my router relay will work like this?
CNC specs:
Rat Rig KillerBee frame
4x DM542S Cloudray Stepper Driver
4x Nema 23 4,2A 425oz.in
2x 48V 7,3A PSU
1x 5V 10A PSU
1x RoutER11

No, you should add a 24 volt power supply for field power. Connect one terminal (usually -24v) to field power common and all I/0 should be using that power. (eg limit switches etc,) the 5 volts is only used for logic power.

Are the limit switches NPN or PNP type?
This determines the connection of the 7I96 input common terminal
And yes, the 7I96 outputs are just switches

Okay thanks, guess I'll have to go with 4 power supplies then
And I don't know if the limit switches are NPN or PNP, the only thing in the description is that it's a normally open
Also now you've made me a little nervous, if my components even will work well together, now that I've missed the 24v power supply.
I've listed the parts in the bottom of the post, if you could verify that they will work together, thanks!

You can get away with the setup you have. The wiring is a bit off for the estop and depending on the switches you use will help decide how to wire it.
24v power supply for io gives a bit more noise immunity. The 7i96 has a wide range for io voltages. I don't see the part numbers for the switches and relays you plan to use. That can help with figuring things out.

I tend to use DC-to-DC converters for lower voltages. For example my mill has a big 24V supply to power some brushless motor drivers (not currently used...) and then buck-converter modules make 12V for the PC power, 5V for the Mesa card power and 4.2V for some Ikea LED lights.
I like them because they have an LED showing output voltage, and they take up very little space.
This sort of thing: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143973480797
(However I don't see one with an LED voltmeter that can handle 48V input voltage)

I was going to go with an estop that had two NC contacts; one for the router and one for the input on 7i96.
What is off with the estop wiring?
The limit switches are these:

And the router relay is this one:

If they are mechanical switches then the NPN / PNP question has no meaning. That is only relevant to solid-state proximity switches.

I was confused by the three terminal nature of the switches.
They do appear to be PNP type (because they seem to have a built in LED and filtering
though this is not clear nor is whether they are NO or NC switches)
So assuming PNP type wiring, the 7I96 input common should be grounded
This also means one side of the the EStop input should be 5V rather than ground

It is possible that it is a solid-state microswitch lurking inside, though at the price I would expect a conventional mechanical one.
