yet another parallel port issue was created by 2e0poz
hi guys
done a ton of fresh installs and keep running up against the same problem ver 2.8.2 is not recognising the parallel port properly. im using a dell optiplex 780 with a pci card. ive updated the hal with correct addresses and included both "in" and "out but nothing . ive tried all bios options with the settings for the inbuilt port too just in case that affected anything?
lspci -vvv result below for the card in question.
04:02.0 Parallel controller: Device 1c00:2170 (rev 0f) (prog-if 01 [BiDir])
Subsystem: Device 1c00:2170
Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster- SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx-
Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 9
Region 0: I/O ports at dcf0
Region 1: I/O ports at dcf8
Any help would be great thank you

just did a grep on the port. Results from this does not work either.
paul@debian:~$ sudo cat /proc/ioports | grep parport
0378-037a : parport0
037b-037f : parport0

I obviously just needed to voice the problem out loud.

0xdcf0
or
0xdcf8
should work although there are things missing from the lspci result, like EPP/ECP/Bidirectional, so might also not work.
And do not bother adding in or out for add on cards, most of them do not handle mode setting.

Hi Tommy yes i did try those but to no avail. It dosent matter as the onboard fired into life for me and works fine on 0378. I know the card works as it was used in another machine previously, just dosent like this machine.
The machine im using is an old office pc and the bios is locked off from being updated (can acces the general bios stuff). It is way out of date which i suspect is the problem.

Some times a bad slot. Have you tried removing and reinserting the card a few times?

Yeah this happens a lot with add on cards, but mostly due to handling the card and touching the pins by hand. Some times a bad slot. Have you tried removing and reinserting the card a few times?
