running closed loop stepper without encoder was created by PhilipME
Hello
Not sure if this topic will fit in any other forum division
the topic :
I want to run the closed loop stepper motor without the cable between the stepper motor, and the driver.
The encoder cable is short. I think to get it extended, I have to use sheilded cable and I would expect some precautions regarding length of the cable and keeping it away from power cables.
I thought while figuring out how to extend the encoder cable, I run it without encoder to save time.
I can hear very short click coming from the motor, but nothing else.
I thought maybe this motor is configured not to run without the encoder connected, but I do not have the programing cable to study this possibility in the motor driver configuration software.
I checked the connections with ohm meter, all seem to be OK.
Any thoughts or hints will be appreciated,
Philip

The closed loop motor driver needs the encoder signals it work.
You can use a standard driver instead...

Thanks itsme
I brought the motor to the bench, and connected the encoder.
Still not working properly. It makes rateling noise, then trips with error.
But I followed your advice, and used open loop driver, and it ran very good and smooth.
So it must be something related to the encoder.
I sent cloudray e mail (where I bought the motor) . and I will make more rounds to check the wiring.
There are 20 wires that go to the driver, so the possibility of a lose wire is high.
my best reagrds

Have you cross checked with other motor and controller and cable?
So you can identify the faulty part...

Seems like encoder or motor is reversed.
The easiest would be to reverse just two motor pins of ONE winding.

this is the only closed loop motor that I have. The motor run smooth with open loop drive, and I do not have any other close loop motor to check the encoder wires against.
I find that the db9 connection (male-female) has a different routing than the data sheet. But I do not know if it is suposed to be staight connection or cross-over.
If it is supposed to be staight connection, then the color code in the datasheet is not right, if the connection is supposed to be cross-over, then the color code maybe OK, and the issue is something else.
thanks for the help
Philip

I tried everything I know with no luck
I will try linuxcnc using another computer
I will also try using arduino
and I will report the findings in few days.
Thank you all

If you are trying to replace/make the encoder cable, I made mine out of some twisted pair cable I bought for some robot stuff, but this is shorth length and static. If you gotta make a new cable and buy cable regardless, get that fancy flex cable, im sure they make a twisted pair version or something for encoders.
If you are trying to fix your stepper, I have a lichuan closed loop stepper, the cloudray looks almost identical, and our pinouts are the same on the driver, mine has 9 dip switch though. your manual is better than mine so check the led error lights, they are listed in your manual , hopefully my drive will be the same.
If you wanna gamble that most things from china are the same, I checked the pinout with what I could find
www.cloudraylaser.com/products/cloudray-...d-loop-stepper-motor
My db9 encoder connector is mostly the same as this one(except for the wire colours), except that gnd is pin 8 and 5v is pin7. , the datasheet for the motor I linked has the gnd on pin9 and 5v on pin8
EA- is pin2
EA+ is pin1
EB- is pin5
EB+ is pin4
form the green connector to the female db9, I see straight connection, although I dont exactly know what you mean
I had an error like this on the weekend, but my manual didnt tell me what the lights meant, one of the the encoder wires came loose on the drive side

Thanks cakeslob for the very usefull post. I was thinking of extending the encoder cable using ethernet cable . I need about 5 meters of cable.
I was able to run the motor perfectly with grbl( arduino controler)
So either I am missing some settings in linuxcnc, or I have a latency issue.
both my computers run below 35000 ns after a good abuse.
To avoid confusing the readers (Which I am very good at), I will open another thread since now I have specific questions.
I value all replies in this thread.

Use shielded ethernet cable, it is cheap and easy to find.
