MPG on 5i25-7i77 Combo - Encoder or Inputs? was created by B.Reilly01
I have a 100ppr MPG without detents that I am planning on using, but searching there seems to be disagreement on how to hook it up. In PnCConf there's an option to use a free encoder slot, but research suggests that this likely will not result in 100 steps per turn of the wheel and that I should use inputs 16-19. Is the encoder slot a good way to do this? I'd much rather use an encoder input, but I do want true scaling to the scale on the handwheel.
Thank you

If you want 100 counts, the 7I77 Field inputs (Field inputs 16 and 17) are the way to go since the high speed encoder
inputs do not support a 1X mode
inputs do not support a 1X mode

How do I set that up? Will it play nicely with a 5V encoder? I see I need to be in "Mode 3," do I do that in PnCConf? I apologize for the silly questions, I'm trying to pick this up in bits and pieces.
EDIT: Found in this thread that 5V encoder will be fine.
He has how to set modes using a command line, but I wonder if PnCConf will effect that?
edit again: Looks like I'm WAY ahead of myself and need to go do all that command line stuff first. Is the wiki at eusurplus a good place to start?

On the newest 2.7 versions of pncconf you can pick mode 3 for the 7i77 and 7i76.
that will then automatically show the appropriate GPIO as encoders.

Okay, I just reinstalled 2.7 Wheezy image (I was running 2.6.4) and I don't see how to switch modes... What page is it on?
**EDIT: ...and that's the way it goes. No sooner than I hit post, I find it on i/o3 Hopefully tomorrow I can start setting up my jumper blocks and get to actually attaching the 7i77 to the hardware.**

Note on the left where it says '7i77 mode 0 I/O card'
You can change it to mode 3 there.
then on the 7i77-I/O TB7 tab an encoder will show up.
