Yeah I thinking the only real options I have would be
1 swap the 7i76 for the 5abob and use the 7i76 for control interface and the 5abob for stepper, spindle and home switch interface.
2 keep the 7i76 where it is controlling the machine and buy a 7i73 for operator interface.
3 I still have a spare parallel port and a serial port on my mb which I could possibly use but not sure how?

The items I need to connect are:
Program start button
Program pause button
Simple 18ppr encoder spindle override
Simple 18ppr encode feed override
100ppr handwheel encoder
Xyz select rotary switch
Increment 1,10,100 rotary switch

Cheapest solution preferred, I’m grateful for your guidance
Many thanks

Edit: I could replace the two override encoders for two potentiometers?

Its possible to put 2 encoders on the 5ABOB but I'm not sure if the 5ABOB
OPTO inputs will work with the 5V signals that many MPGs use

Your could also wire the MPGs directly to P2 is you are careful that they never have voltages > 5V or less than -0.5V (or use another BOB that has more inputs)

I’m not sure if it’s possible but Can I use some of the pins on my 5abob as regular gpio pins where I could connect simple encoders to for feed and speed overrides. Can I use these with software encoders please?
Many thanks

Yes, that can be done. Even the 1mS servo thread works OK for handwheels.

Thankyou, I’m not gona pretend I know what that means but it’s good news I think.
I’m really starting to feel that my Linux incompetence is getting in the way of my design and build. I’ve spent all last weekend trying to get the touchscreen calibration to work after changing the motherboard and hard disk. I got it working with xinput calibrator but I’m unable to ‘make the changes permanent’ I just keep getting error after error and it’s all down to the fact that I’ve no clue what I’m doing

Regards

FWIW I have never managed that either, and have always given up on it and hand-edited an xorg.conf file.
