Would it help to reinstall my operating system? Maybe a fresh start could eliminate some issues.

Did you make sure you backed out any changes you made in the setup file?

Deleting it did the trick. I'm very happy!
Well, no more errors but ping says operation not permitted.
quick question,
I have one ethernet port and it is hooked up to the mesa. Is connecting to the internet as simple as unplugging the mesa and hooking up to my router?

You can use the same port but it means switching the host configuration back and forth
Much better to get a USB --> Ethernet dongle for internet access
