I suppose it's possible - but at that point your going to have to hand edit the config files and learn about the details of linuxcnc anyways. The names from discovered data could be quite different from the HAL pins. But I guess you would at least know you had the right firmware or not...What do you think about using that texts as combobox entries which are disabled like now. That way the user could verify function and pin-type and use it in self written halfile extensions ...
Last not least - the support of analog inputs. Currently there's a choice between 'unused' and 'user defined type', which leads to unused - so there's no choice at all.
Try typing in the combo box and then press enter - that custom signal name will be connected to the pin in the HAL file now.
You'll see a list of all the custom signals you typed under the 'custom signals dropdown, after you enter at least one.

This is a problem with the discovery system - how to deal with things you don't know and how to warp them into the existing framework of pncconf.
Pncconf's programming framework has been stretched about as far as it can go.
When it works it is so very useful - but it's hard to get to work properly.
Our switch to python 3 will probably kill it or force a rethink and major rework.

(re)thinking is always a good optionPncconf's programming framework has been stretched about as far as it can go.

Now I understand your hesitation in doing things right. Might be wasted effort.
Well - bad times ...
Anyway - is was a pleasure to help you improve pncconf.
If you ever decide to use a real programming language for pncconf, I would be happy to jump in for help.

Ok, this time I created a configuration, that is known to pncconf and hal ...Yes currently pncconf only knows about 7i73 in mode 1
But linuxcnc fails at startup.
hm2_5i24.0: initialized AnyIO board at 0000:01:05.0
./rma01.hal:162: Signal 'x-pos-fb' can not add OUT pin 'hm2_5i24.0.encoder.04.position', it already has OUT pin 'hm2_5i24.0.stepgen.08.position-fb'
Shutting down and cleaning up LinuxCNC...
Did you ever test a closed loop stepper configuration generated from pncconf?

sure, I can comment out the pin to get linuxcnc to come up, but planned functionality is not given then. Beyond that, I don't know, how it should look right. May be some logic component is missing? No clue
... and: as pncconf is a tool for beginner, I would expect that every possible generation would work.
Is your expectation different?
I don't talk about what is possible with user entered pin names - that's of cause out of business of pncconf. But straight lines of configuration paths should work so far?!?

I rely on feedback from - mostly users. Devs don't generally use pncconf.

What a bummer.I rely on feedback from - mostly users.
Lot of users try software and disappear silently
I never got feedback about my app. Too bad for that
.
LOL - if you know how things should work together, then of cause you don't need helpDevs don't generally use pncconf.

It works pretty well for normal open loop steppers and closed loop servo machines.
I have threatened to remove it for years but when it works its very helpful.
But I'm only one guy

Are there sample hal files available for working closed loop servo installations? It works pretty well for normal open loop steppers and closed loop servo machines.
May be, I could find out the missing link by myself?

LOL - from my observation a very helpful and for so very important guyBut I'm only one guy
