hello people, kindly I need help: I would like to convert an Emco Compact 5 Cnc lathe, with stepper motors, economic Vevor servomotor (all already in my possession) and Mesa card.
I would like to know which Mesa to buy in order to manage everything and be able to run G76 and G84.
I state that I do not know anything about programming!
Is it possible to do it?
sorry my english!

I used a Mesa 7i96 on a small stepper powered lathe project.

Thanks for the reply!are you used an AC servo for the spindle?

I used a regular VFD and 3Ph induction motor. The 7i96 can be set up to output one channel of PWM signal, so I used a cheap PWM to analog board to convert that to the 0-10V analog signal for the VFD speed control.

do you use a spindle encoder for g76 or is it enough for a vfd or ac servo driver to read the real RPM speed, I mean, can the feedback index from the encoder be bypassed when threading?

Default for is the use of an encoder including index signal. Though there is a LinuxCNC setting to accept only an index pulse per rev for threading. . You cant sync without at least the index pulse though.
Both of my lathes have an encoder driven with 1:1 toothed belts off the spindle.
If you have a 1:1 toothed belt drive between the AC Servo and the spindle, you could use the servo's encoder, but it would need to be a very powerful servo to have enough torque.

thank you very much, I asked how I could try, not to try in vain if it can't, the ratio is 1:1, I don't have any problem installing an encoder, but I'd rather avoid it if possible. the engine is roughly strong, 2.3kw and the driver reads realistically with a minor deviation in revolutions, say +-5 rpm. I'll let you know how it goes when I finish the lathe.

Cool set up.
That should work fine for threading. If you try to take a cut that is too deep, the axis motion should follow the spindle into the stall, halting the tool in the thread.
