UPGRADE TO LINUXCNC 2.9 & MESA 7I97 (CINCINNATI Acramatic 2100 &MILACRON BDS4) was created by waleed2024
Hi;
I have an old milling machine with (CINCINNATI Acramatic 2100), the control is dead now
I have a 7I97 mesa board and i want to control the machine servo drivers (CINCINNATI MILACRON BDS4).
I got a PC and install LINUXCNC 2.9.2 to it ang install mesa configuration tool.
I'm new to mesa boards and I will need help in this journy.
first issue i have faced when try to flash the firmware to the 7i97, I found more than bit file just like the image, witch one i should choose??
thanks

I would suggest not updating the firmware at all
unless you need to support one of listed daughtercards (7I85 etc)

thank you
I thought burn the firmware for the first time, now its clear its allready contained

If you need help wiring and testing stuff, start here
forum.linuxcnc.org/10-advanced-configura...ning-detailed-how-to
No skipping, and do not wire everything at once, there is detailed info there.

I want to connect the BDS4 analog servo drive, the drive is closed loop with the motor.
There is no resolver feed back from the drive to control, Can i control this drive open loop?
What is the difference between resolver and the encoder?
There is an analog signal called 'SPEED MONITOR' 8 volt max, it was mentioned in the manual as follow:
Pin 19 Speed Monitor
There is a direct relationship between the signal appearing at this output and actual motor speed. A DC voltmeter (or other instrument) placed between Pin 19 and common, calibrated in RPM, can serve as a means by which speeds may be monitored. Refer to the TL Sheet for the scale factor in volts/RPM (8 volts = maximum speed) as listed on the TL Sheet for the particular motor/amplifier combination (3K Ohm output impedance).
Can I connect this signal instead of the encoder feed back?

You must have encoder feedback as that is position feedback.
Velocity feedback by itself will result in slow drift and loss of position.
pncconf does not support the 7I97/7I97T but you can use mesact
instead (see the mesact section of the forum)
Alternatively here is a basic hal/ini file set, note that you still
need to go through the tuning/setup guide that tommylight
posted a link to, and edit the ini file to set your machine parameters
plus edit the hal file to make it match your limit/home/spindle
etc setup.

Thanks for your help
I already make a configuration on pncconf using auto detect . And it read the 7i97 automatically.
And i have to configure an encoder for each axis.
But the servo driver is closed loop with motor, and i want to send the 10v signal to the driver?
Also,
What is the difference between resolver and the encoder?
Some members in another topic said that it is common for servos that use resolvers to have the drive read the resolver and then the servo drive creates a quadrature encoder signal that is sent to the control for feedback.
Is it possible in my case?

Note that even though pncconfs discovery option will find the card
it will not setup the PWM properly or allow setup of the digital inputs
This is why I provided the example 7I97 hal/ini files
If you do have resolvers in the system, it is likely that they connect to the drives
Have you been able to find a manual for the drives?
EDIT:
There do seem to be drive manuals available. I took a look at one
and I did not see any encoder output but its possible that that is an option.
Are the encoders/scales elsewhere in the machine?
