Feel like an idiot for posting this as I've been using EMC2/LinuxCnc for a couple of years on several different computers but I bought a new computer for a specific project and I can't get Glade Interface Designer to run on it. Loaded a new install of Linux 10.04 with LinuxCnc as I normally do from a live CD and followed all of the usual steps but no luck. Can anybody give me some insights?

There will certainly be no insights on offer unless you report what you did, what you expected, and what you got.

Also, it's friday and the crystal balls are recharging.

please read this, and let's go from there: www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html

I followed the install instructions in the Glade manual:
sudo apt-get install glade
Entered my password
The system returned:
"Reading Package Lists...Done
Building Dependency Tree
Reading state information...Done
C: Couldn't find package glade"

I haven't had this problem installing in the past on other systems using the same Live CD.

Hi

You should get something like (this is from Debian)

root@INTEL-QUAD:~# apt-get install glade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
devhelp devhelp-common libatk1.0-doc libdevhelp-3-0 libgladeui-2-0 libgladeui-common libglib2.0-doc libgtk-3-dev libgtk-3-doc
libpango1.0-doc
Suggested packages:
libgtk2.0-doc
The following NEW packages will be installed:
devhelp devhelp-common glade libatk1.0-doc libdevhelp-3-0 libgladeui-2-0 libgladeui-common libglib2.0-doc libgtk-3-dev libgtk-3-doc
libpango1.0-doc
0 upgraded, 11 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 9,301 kB of archives.
After this operation, 59.3 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

so can only assume your package configurations are not right

/etc/apt/sources.list should contain all these, if not add them
(change gb to us or whatever applies)

deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-security universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-security multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-security multiverse

Then run apt-get update and try again, should find the glade package now

(PS you may need to install glade-gnome too for some widgets)

I appreciate the help but unfortunately the laptop we're installing on will not connect to the Internet no matter what network cards we've tried so I guess we're back to square one. I'll reload the live Cd and start from scratch. I don't remember this being something we had to configure from scratch in the past so maybe I'm not using the correct live Cd. Is there a newer version available? or do I need to use an older version.

The obvious answer is connect it to the router with an ethernet cable and update it.

If glade is on the Live CD, what may have happened is that at the end of the install, the CD is removed from the list of sources.

Go into Synaptic Package Manager > Settings > Repositories, insert the CD into the drive and when recognised click the check box for using that CD

Then try it
