Has anyone worked with optical switches for homing? was thinking of trying them.

Yes, I have used them. Transmissive with flags is probably more resilient than reflective.
I have come to prefer inductive sensors buried inside the slides where contamination and damage is less likely. That works well if you have encoders with index to give a secondary super-accurate position. without encoders the optical sensors should be more accurate than proximity sensors.
