Hi
You can run any LinuxCNC version you like, it is the OS that is hardware dependant.
I would install from the Ubuntu 8.04 based Live CD.
I have a P4 2.4 GHz and a 2.8GHz and Ubuntu 10.04 will not install on them but Ubuntu 8.04 works perfectly.
Then when you have got to grips with the basics, created a configuration and got it working etc. you can install a later version of LinuxCNC if you want.
wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Installing_LinuxCNC gives the info required.
You can either install a Run In Place system, to try out a version whilst not overwriting the pre-installed version or you can install the version in replacement of that supplied with the Live CD.
Take your time, the supplied version is fully capable until you get to a stage where you might want or need some of the updates in later versions.

Yep as ArcEye stated 8.04 is probably your best bet.
I would boot from the Live cd try it out and run the latency test before instaling.
You could also do the same with 10.04 to see which works better.
Either way you will be able to use the current version on LinxCNC.

Ubuntu 8.04 was installed on a separate drive and loaded up fine.......except Ubuntu now prompts me to enter a usename and password to log in. Problem is that I did not declase or assign a user name or password when installing the software. Suggestions please. Thank you

I just saw this same problem on a Linux site. They said to use Ubuntu for user name and no password. I hope it works for you also. Carl

Hi
Shows you should always set a root and 1st user password.
Ubuntu will not allow root login by default, albeit you can amend gdm.conf to do so.
Ubuntu does not allow anonymous login, it offers automatic log in as a user, so you must have one user.
Also selecting automatic login, even if you have assigned a user does not always work, again may need to edit gdm.conf, so you definitely need to remember the password.
The combination cweb posted should be the correct default user / password.
It does not always work, so another way which is a bit more involved.
1. boot from a live CD, and start a terminal session, root terminal if possible
2. mount your hard drive partition somewhere like /mnt (eg. mount /dev/hda1 /mnt)
3. 'chroot /mnt'
4. 'adduser username'
5. 'passwd username userpassword'
6. 'exit'
7. then quit the Live CD and reboot from HDD
