I have ran CNC machines in the past with proprietary operating systems.
I'm looking at purchasing a CNC router that has some really old hardware/software on it.
The plan would be to bring the machine forward in time and use Linuxcnc to do it.
I am by on means a computer wiz. I'm running Ubuntu OS and don't really understand it's ins and outs.

Questions:

Is Linuxcnc something a computer neophyte can use?
Can I run it in Ubuntu 12.4?
Is there a way to download it without burning a CD? (old laptop)

I have additional questions but this is asking a lot already.

Thank you in advance, Allen

Yes, you can get support 3-ways. This forum, the IRC, the mailing list.
Not at this time (well some have but it is not for the faint of heart).
Yes, you can use a USB stick to boot with. Search the wiki for instructions. No, you don't want to use an old laptop. If you must use and old laptop try the 8.04 LiveCD.

Thanks to John for his help.

So what should I do, uninstall 12.4 and try to reload 10.4?

Perhaps I should grab a different PC and stuff a new drive in it and down load 10.4 and then Linuxcnc.

I would go with option 2 with the exception of using the 10.04 or 8.04 LiveCD (depends on the age of the computer) so the real time kernal install goes smoothly.
