Boot failure Lcnc install on fresh Ububtu 10.04

Hi everyone,

After running the install script on a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04, everything seems to run fine until I reboot.
The boot procedure fails and leaves me with an almost black screen saying:

"gave up waiting for root device,...."
Then a series of possible problems like boot args & missing modules.
Then "Busybox v1.13.3 (initramfs)"

uname -r gives me 2.6.32-122-rtai.
as far as I understand, this means that the real time kernel did install correctly, since I started from a 2.6.32-38-generic setup before running the install script.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.
Olivier

Btw. I wasn't able to run the liveCD. Therefore I need to install in 2 steps: first the OS, then LinuxCNC.
I don't suspect hardware deficiencies since I'm using a recent setup and didn't have any problem running and installing the 10.04 Live CD in both 64b and 32b and the newer 12.04 liveCD worked fine as well.

"gave up waiting for root device,...."

Googling the error report found
ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=981159
which suggests just typing "exit" in the busybox...
(and changing a boot option)

Hi

If you google this problem, you will find shed loads of references to it, but no all encompassing solution. It is largely hardware related.
When I have had it previously it has been a problem in initrd.img not being right and not being able to recognise the drive it is supposed to be mounting as /

I wasn't able to run the liveCD.

This needs explanation and may be indicating the problem. Need to know what your computer is, chipsets and all that.

There are some SandyBridge motherboards that cannot run a RTAI kernel.
I tried helping someone who could not run the 2.6.32-122-rtai kernel on his, by building another later kernel as rtai.
This worked fine regards building it, but it would not run and halted with the same error.

(This is not a universal SandyBridge problem, because I have a laptop with that chipset which runs 10.04 < 9K max jitter.)

See this post - sounds just the same as your problem
www.linuxcnc.org/index.php/english/forum...install?limitstart=0

If so the only advice is use another computer, unless this does not take you out of your comfort zone too much.

Hello again,
Thanks for your quick answers.

I tried the "EXIT" command on several minutes (even a full night) interval, but it doesn't help.

I'm affraid ArcEye points out the right problem: RTAI compatibility:

My setup is:
* celeron G530 (lga1155) processor
* MSI H61M-P23 (B3 rev.) motherboard
* SAPPHIRE HD5450 512M DDR3 PCI-E video card (to avoid issues with build in graphics on ubuntu)
* 2GB Gskill DDR3 pc10600 RAM
* SAMSUNG DVD/RW
* WD 160GO 7200 RPM 8MO SATA 2 hard drive

For try-out, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on side-by-side basis.
(50/50 partition of my hard drive)

I have now several GRUB start up options:
* 3.5.0-25-generic
* 2.6.32-122-rtai
* 2.6.32-38-generic

+ all 3 in recovery mode + some MEM-test

I can boot perfectly well on the 2 generic cores, but the RTAI option fails.

I mounted an USB KEY using Unetbootin based on the "ubuntu-10.04-linuxcnc3-i386.iso" image.
surprissingly, the key boots without any problem when I choose "try ubuntu without installing":
* I see a 10.04 based desktop with linuxcnc programs installed
* I can run a jitter test and even run linuxcnc (no hardware connected)
* In the terminal, uname -r gives me 2.6.32-122-rtai

I was expecting this USB KEY to fail as well, like would the liveCD based on the same image.
However, running LinuxCNC from an USB key isn't really a thing to do, is it?

Trying "install ubuntu" from the USB KEY startup options or via the icon on the desktop is no option neither:
After having confirmed my geographical location and keyboard lay-out, the installer ask me on what partition to install ubuntu.
However, he doesn't "see" my hard drive.
(probably because it is disregarding it in favor of the USB key)

The LiveCD itself gives the following message:
"unable to find a medium containing a live file system"

I think my problem is very similar to the one encountered by "Billooms" earliier this year.
I'll dig a little deeper in his story as well.

Thanks and comments/questions/suggestions more than welcome
Olivier
