Newbie struggles having LinuxCNC to launch !

Hello;

While experimenting my first CNC environment (GeckoDrive540 drive on a Windows/Mach3 install), I have been highly annoyed by the lack of thinking and organization put in Mach3 interface. This awful and unprofessional product is certainly used by lots of windows aficionados, but this is typically the type of no brain software that pushes me to fly away from Windows !! Only pain in the neck in terms of overkilled complexity.

That said, "+1" brand new user to the Linux community... I decided to abandon my dear and friendly Windows and trash with joy this awful Mach3 configuration, only to dive into the unknown world... Linux/Emc2.

Please excuse my lack of experience and know-how in this forum.

Managed to download the latest installer in january 2014 "Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid Lynx' along LinuxCNC (version 2.5 as displayed by the startup screen)" and installed it to my X64 Dell machine. Perfect Linux install.... but, LinuxCNC displays a big big error at startup...whatever sample config. file chosen.

Could somebody help me on this as I am completely stuck now... Many thanks in advance.
This is the error message I get :

How did you install LinuxCNC? Looks like you may not have the realtime kernel.

In a terminal what does uname -a return?

In a terminal what does uname -a return?

In deference to your claimed Linux-newbiness...

You can open a terminal window from the top-left menu, under accessories. (Or ctrl-alt-T I think, it might be Ctrl-shift-T)
It is possible to get the information requested in the GUI, but it is much easier to suggest command-line instructions on a forum or chat.

So, open a terminal window, type
uname -a
and paste the result of the command here.

That is the correct kernel. The next most likely thing is a problem with the Local APIC. (LAPIC).
In the terminal again, type
dmesg
This will produce a ton of stuff, scroll back up to where the timestamp is zero (machine boot time) and see if you can see any lines mentioning "LAPIC" or "Local APIC"

BigJohn, you'll find the dump of the dmesg terminal query. I see ACPI in it, but no sign of LAPIC neither Local APIC. Hope this helps diagnosing ! Thanks again.

[ 3467.746322] vmap allocation for size 2101248 failed: use vmalloc=<size> to increase size.

It could be this. There is a solution fouind by someone else here: www.linuxcnc.org/index.php/english/forum...imit=6&start=6#16132

I have no idea why only you two would see this problem.

BINGO ! Thanks a lot for your precious help BigJohn. It works fine now... I followed the previous thread link and discovered i also had a double GT880 NVidia graphic card... so that's maybe the cultprit for increased memory requirements.

This is what i've done to solve the problem:

> Typed the following in Accessories>Terminal (because the grub.cfg file was only in read mode in graphical user mode)
cd /etc/default
sudo gedit grub

> Typed my admin password at sudo password prompt (even if my typing was not displayed, it took my digits into account, then I hit ENTER)
> The grub.cfg file then appeared in read/write mode.
> Changed the command line to : "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash vmalloc=256M"
> Restarted the machine
> Launched LinuxCNC
> Brilliant. The app launches !

Thanks again for your help.
