LinuxCNC On Ubuntu Precise - ACPI error was created by redbase
Hi All
Fresh install of Precise 12.04.4 desktop i386 following wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?LinuxCNC_On_Ubuntu_Precise.
Max CPU's are set to 1, ACPI is enabled in BIOS and BIOS is the latest version.
No issues during install process however when trying to run HALCMD receive the error:
RTAPI: ERROR could not open shared memory (errorno=2)
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
DMesg has the complaint shown in the list below.
Can someone provide some comments on how to / where to look for a fix? Newbie to Linux
Thanks
Greg

Hi
The error in dmesg may well be related to your BIOS and has occurred many times before especially with Ubuntu kernels it seems
bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43229
Asus boards have been noted with this bug especially the Ivy Bridge chipset ones (i3 i5 i7)
However I have an Asus P8H61-M-Pro i7 board with none of those warnings and it runs the 3.4.55-rtai kernel just fine (albeit I am using Debian 7)
I would go back to the start, remove the packages, revert BIOS to multi-core and any other original settings and start the stock pae kernel and check dmesg.
If you still have the warnings, you then know it is nothing to do with the kernel
If not change the BIOS settings to as you had them but still boot the pae kernel
Any warnings then?
Remove the BIOS changes and install the new kernel and boot it
Any warnings?
Revert the BIOS changes and check again on a reboot etc
Then at least you will have a better idea where the problem in dmesg lies.
regards

Thanks for the feedback, we have this part up and running.
As suggested BIOS back to original settings - was a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
Fresh install of 12.04.4 LTS with 3.4.55 RTAI-2 seems to work.
Cheers all
