Just installed Ubuntu 14.04 but now understand that I need to wipe that and install on Ubuntu Precise 12.04?

Hi
If you want to use apt for packages and updates, yes.
Quite honestly I would install Wheezy from the hybrid.iso.
I don't think 14.04 will ever be specifically supported, Ubuntu is just too bloated and quirky these days.
I have been running it for a year or so and it looks like that will be the platform for any official Live DVD.
The buildbot supports Wheezy.
regards

As a nube to both Ubunto and LinuxCNC, still unclear if I can install LinuxCNC on Ubuntu 14.04.
Wheezy is an alternative to Ubuntu? From other documentation on site, thought LinuxCNC was "wedded" to Ubuntu.

Not if you want to install and update via apt with pre-built packages
Your choices are Ubuntu 12.04 or Debian 7 (Wheezy)
Thankfully not any more.
The longer term goal is hopefully still to make Linuxcnc what it should be, a software package, and leave the user to provide a suitable platform.
The original decision to bundle on a 'simple user friendly' distro was to overcome
the problems of complete linux novices trying to use it, but brought a huge amount of work supporting a distro which took no account of our use of it.
That effort would be better spent developing linuxcnc.

just want to tell u. ArcEye
I'm so exciting that there finally have LinuxCNC in Debian. I've the way rock solid of Debian offer!
Even I not have machine yet , only my own design breakout board and driver board. Coz I step by step learning. And I love to design on my own and study in detail special in Linux , circuit.
Sooner or later I've have full system running.
Exciting on LinuxCNC on Debian! I believe this is a smart move from Ubuntu.
Goodluck!
