Hi

I take it you have tried the obvious thing, try it with the Caps Lock on, in case that is how it was when you set it.

The other possibility is using a foreign keyboard with the keyboard type set incorrectly, but since you are in the US and it defaults to US, probably not.

Otherwise you need to reset it

Boot into the recovery option,
or if that is not present, press 'e' at the GRUB menu and edit the kernel boot line from something like
ro quiet splash
to
ro single
then press F10

You will get a root shell

Enter
passwd tonyo (or whatever your user name is)
Then enter the new password twice when prompted

Then enter passwd -u tonyo

Now reboot and you should be able to log in normally

regards

When the computer comes to the login screen the top area says jberknercnc and when I enter the password I get the incorrect password screen
I did the procedure and when I tried to do the passwd jberknercnc It told me there was no user by that name.. I did a passwd -Sa and found only a line for jim.
I changed the passwd for jim then entered passwd -u jim
After a reboot, the passwd still came up incorrect. any ideas?
Thanks Jim

After a reboot, the passwd still came up incorrect.

It is very easy to type a password when the prompt is actually asking for a username.

"login" means "type your username". Even if there is only one user.

I make this mistake regularly, as my other machines just need a password.
