Hi.

Will Linux CNC install and work on Ubuntu 14.04 64bit or Peppermint 4 or 5?
If so how do I go about getting it and installing it.
Thanks
Mark

If (and only if) you can get a suitable kernel.

You need an RTAI kernel for current LinuxCNC, and either an RTAI or RT-PREEMPT kernel for the 2.7 development version.

Unless you have a really good reason to run those OS-es you would have a much easier time running from the Debian Wheezy LiveCD.

If you are an accomplished kernel hacker then there is an RTAI patch for the 3.16.0 kernel, so it can be done.

Hi.

Thanks for the reply, But Kernel hacker , uuuuur No. What is a kernel? I have been using Ubuntu for a few years, but thats about as far as my computer knowledge goes. I normally have to ask how to install things that I cannot find on Ubuntu software centre. Where can I get Debian Wheezy and make a live cd. I am guesing that Debian Wheezy is an operating system and a live cd will allow me to run it from a cd insted of installing it on my machine.

Thanks

Mark

The "Download" link at the top of this page is probably the easiest way

Yes, though you would need to install the OS onto your machine to actually control hardware.
Is there a specific reason that yoiu need to run Ubuntu 10.04 on the machine?

At the moment I do not have a machine to run from it. I am wanting to lern the software at the moment. I could put it onto another desk top and run it on that.

In that case the LiveCD is perfect, you can boot from CD, play about with LinuxCNC and leave the PC completely unaltered.
