Still no joy.
Does the "axis test" reverse direction automatically? (could I have the step and dir pins reversed?)
Just for shits and giggles I reversed the X axis step/dir pins in the wizard. My steppers started making noises! The acceleration and max velocity were waaay too fast, so I experimented and found that 4.3mm/s max velocity and 4mm/s2 acceleration were optimal for my ex-printer steppers.
It'd be great to increase the max velocity by altering the stepper params, but from listening to the tune played by the steppers, I think I've got better speed than my old EMC/BDI system could give.
I'm calling this resolved!
Thanks team!
