Updating to latest version

I'm running 2.4.6 currently, and can't get the mill and computer to talk to each other.

Downloaded the latest version and want to build a live install (Do we still do that?)

Currently my DVD writer seems to work fine on CDs, but not on DVDs. So suppose I need to get a new reader/writer and install in.

In the interim, I'd like to make a live USB memory stick, but can't seem to find instructions to do so. Any help?

Thanks

Tom

I'm going to go try this on my Linux machine now.

But although the instructions are there for making a DVD on a Windows machine, there seem to be no instructions for creating the memory stick on a Windows machine. Any chance of someone adding this one item?

Trying to generate a live memory stick. Went through the "dmesg" info, and it appears that my memory stick is showing up as "sda". Am I reading this right?

But when I finally got the .iso moved into the home directory and asked for the "dd", I got a "Permission denied" message.

What am I doing wrong?

Here's part of the terminal output:

You need to add sudo before any command that needs root permissions, in your case
instead of
tom@tom-server:~$ dd if=linuxcnc-2.7-wheezy.iso of=/dev/sda
you do
tom@tom-server:~$ sudo dd if=linuxcnc-2.7-wheezy.iso of=/dev/sda
nothing more, and you have a working bootable usb stick in 5 minutes (or thereabouts).
Regards,
Tom, the other!!! :)

Thanks. Nice to get a quick reply like that. I'm also looking at installing a tinyG, and it takes me a day or two to get an answer on their forum.

Wish I used Linux more often. I maintain several Linux based web sites, so remember the basics, but have never had to use "sudo" or many of those other commands there. In fact, they are probably blocked by the admin.

Big change being my own admin at home.

Glad to help, and this is my usual time here on the forum (currently 2AM here).
I use linux exclusively for nearly 10 years now, had to use windoze a lot since i owned computer shops, and i am positive 90% of my stress was from having to use windoze (daily over 20 installs and virus removal and data recovery and......oh nevermind, never again,).
Been using ubuntu till some months ago, namely the 10.04 since newer versions vent to c@#$#@, using Mint on my main laptop last 2 years and now switched all my systems to Mint or Debian wheezy.
Sleeping time, have to build a cnc engraver tomorrow, only 5 days to finish and sell it.
Regrds,
Tom
