Some of the tricks and info I've picked up when working with Stretch

Boot into Text Mode

To temporarily boot into text mode, edit the kernel command line in grub and add
systemd.unit=multi-user.target

In order to make text boot the default under systemd (regardless of which distro, really)
systemctl set-default multi-user.target

To change back to booting to the GUI
systemctl set-default graphical.target

In case of a messed up system, that is very handy to fix things.
Text mode or CLI rules in the Linux world.

There is no “benefit” but sometimes to fix a messed up Desktop confit or to hand edit a desktop config it’s easier to do ,or the only way, without X running. Xconf doesn’t play nicely when hand editing config files.
Or you may need to transfer Desktop setting and menus from one machine to another.
Plus many other reasons you may want to do some admin with a pure terminal without X.

Servers!
No desktop, just a nice black abundance of pure nothingness, with a lot going on behind the scenes !

Installing Gitlab was fun. :silly:
I get 1 hour in the sunshine everyday under the close eye of the pretty nurses now.

Then just for fun Linuxcnc installed after building a system using Linux From Scratch and Beyond Linux From Scratch.
