Installing from USB stick

Following the instructions on linuxcnc.org/docs/html/getting-started/getting-linuxcnc.html, I've tried tree times.
It seems to install ok, but it doesn't detect my wireless network, so I select configure network later(or words to that effect).
I complete the process, but on rebooting it never recognises my password.
A comment I have read elsewhere, suggests that it will only work if I have a lan connection to the rest of my online system.
Is this correct, please?
going to get a very stiff drink.

NO
you can have a install without any Network at all and all mashine configs will work as you expect

the PASSWORD is the MAIN Thing on Linux
so choose a one you always remember

and do not Update to anything
the ISO is ready for 95% of all install mashines

The password problem you have is that the user password or the wifi password ?

Ok I'll need the exact make, model, pci id of your wireless adapter.

If can login with your user password from a terminal run
sudo lspci

Additionally
sudo dmesg
and make a note of anything mentioning missing firmware

Usually no wifi is just a missing driver and or firmware

If you are using the stretch or any other version of Debian, while installing when it asks for a ROOT password, do not enter anything ! Just move on and enter a password for the user you have created.
Debian and it's derivatives use the "sudo" administration system that is more user friendly, so it does not use the root account in normal use.

Thanks everyone for trying to help, but perhaps I need to start my questions in a simpler way.

The hdd of the Dell I am using has been formatted, so nothing on there.

I used www.linuxcnc.org/linuxcnc-2.7-wheezy.iso as a download using zsync, and copied onto my 8Gb memory stick .

I tried it as a live boot, and used it to do a latency test, which is good, <10,000 ns.

I then re-started and did a graphic install, and the only hiccup was it didn't recognise the wifi connection through my usb dongle, when it sid it couldn't detect a network, and I opted to set up the network later.
It asked for a password which I entered ( and yes, it's written down to make sure there was no mistake.)
It finished the installation, and when it re-booted, and asked for my password(nothing to do with the wifi), it didn't recognise it.

Note - when I entered it, and hit login, it cleared the password, so having waited some time, and nothing happened, I tried again. This time it told me it was an incorrect password.
This is where I am at the moment.
I'm now going off to Walmart to buy a lan line long enough to get from the garage to my router, and I'll go through the whole process again.
Unless, when I get back, someone has offered a solution.
Regards,
John

Thank you for that clear and simple solution.
[Makes deep bow]
I hadn't spotted that the first request said "Login", then the second time it asked for a password.

Regards
John

I'm sure I'll find a use for a 25ft lan cable !

Final question here on this topic - reading the instructions on the link above in my post earlier today, is says in point 5, Updates to Linuxcnc " Warning Do not upgrade the operating system if prompted to do so."

Is this only during the installation process, and that I am able to update later, but not upgrade ?

John
EDIT
Too quick, I'm afraid.
Can't detect usb with lsusb - in terminal "command lsusb not found"
Can't install usbutils - no connection !

You can run "apt-get update" & "apt-get dist-upgrade" (the safer option as opposed to upgrade) but you need configure you apt sources and adding a conf file.

So until you get a lan connection you can't install anything.

Does your M\B have a ethernet port ?
