D525MW with Mesa 5i25/7i66 suitable for Debian Stretch LinuxCNC Uspace? was created by JustPlaneSweet
I could use a little help. I upgraded my D525MW with 8Gb ram and a 250Gb SSD. I tried the instructions at
gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/uspace/index.html
for both Linux Mint 19.1 RT and Debian 9 RT and can not get the system to use the Mesa card. My last attempt, currently installed, is the Live/Install for Debian Stretch, RT-PREEMPT, LinuxCNC 2.7.x located
here.
I chose the linuxcnc-stretch-uspace-amd64.iso image and installed from a bootable usb drive.
I ran PNCconf and and configured the system the same as before the upgrade. When I started LinuxCNC I received the following error:
I've been down too many rabbit holes trying to make things work to know what to do next. What do you suggest?
Thanks,
Stan

Do you have 5V power and field power on the 7I76? (both Yellow lights on)

Yes. Both yellow lights are on. I also should clarify that I have the 5i25 not the 5i25e.

For whatever reason, the 7I76 I/O section is not being found
This is not likely to be a OS/version related issue
Common causes would be
1. No or low 5V on 7I76 logic section (verify +5V +-10% on 7I76 TB3 pins 21(5V) to 23 (GND))
2. No or low VIN+ field voltage (verify > 8V on TB1 pins 1 and 5 relative to TB1 pin 8)
3. 7I76 jumpered for setup mode (make sure 7I76 W3 is in left hand position)
4. 5I25/7I76 cable power jumpers mis-match
if using cable power (suggested) 5I25 W2 up, 7I76 W2 LEFT
If using external 5V power 5I25 W2 DOWN, 7I76 W2 RIGHT 5V supplied externally to 7I76TB3
5. incorrect firmware (though this looks correct in you case)
6. loose/bad/incorrect cable between 5I25/7I76

Boy I feel stupid. When I opened the case to check the 5i25 jumpers I discovered I had the 7i76 cable plugged into the regular parallel port instead of the 5i25.
Thanks for your quick response.
LinuxCNC runs now. It complains that the 7i76 has outdated firmware. No problem.

I am not sure if the 7i76 has firmware. So it would be useful if you gave the exact error message

It does. As well as being a breakout it contains a smart-serial device to handle the IO.
Updating remote daughter board firmware is not something that Mesaflash does (AFAIK), you use a slightly kludgy HAL component.
linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/man/man9/setsserial.9.html
linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/man/man9/setsserial.9.html
There are scripts to automate the process (utils/linuxcnc) in the software package from Mese:

Let me know how you like the D525MW. I got rid of my D525 Atom based motherboards and went with a i5 motherboard because of performance issues with the OpenGL display (rendering the 3D cut path often lagged the actual machine). I've had no problems since I've been using an i5 instead of an Atom, but I also upgraded from parallel port to 5i25/7i76 at the same time.
