As wheezy is end of life I was looking at installing the stretch testing iso.

Linuxcnc-strech-uspace-amd64.iso

the machine is an older and althlon 3200 with Mesa 5i25 and 7i76.

Any advice before I start?

I read somewhere that I must have a network connection during installation

Any other tips or tricks to be aware of?

Any post install I should do?

Thanks

I have a complete guide on my web site for installing Debian 9, RT Preempt kernel and LinuxCNC and fixing some annoying things as well as adding things that just make life easier when using Debian. And yes you will need an internet connection during the install.
gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/uspace/debian9-rt.html
gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/uspace/debian9-emc.html

Make a copy of everything you want to save from your home directory or pop in a fresh hard drive then after the install you can plug the old drive back in and copy your configs etc.

If you have issues with latency a radeon card does wonders.
