This HP Elite 8300 SFF does not seem to have a parallel port. Is it simply a question of plugging a new one into the pci? slot?

It has a 26 pin header on the Motherboard (which needs an adapter/bracket to get to DB25F)

setp parport.0.reset-time 1500
So by the ini file the steplength would be 1500ns

And step the min stepspace would be determined by the base thread ?

Would increasing the reset time be of any value (thereby increasing step length?) ?.

It might be worth a try, 1500nS is pretty short. Try 5000 and see if things seem better, or the same.

So, I have given up trying to get stretch to work. I could not see how to turn off sound in the bios, The only thing I thuoght might make a difference was turning off the multiple CPU core, but that made it worse. I am back on wheezy and at least the machine works but I am unable to load software, particularly inkscape and libreCad which makes life difficult. Is there a way to add some kind of archive repository that has this stuff on?

In the mean time I await an HP Elite 8300 SFF and hope I have better luck installing stretch and the works on that.
Thanks for all your help
Cheers

Yes:

(though I have just found out that wheezy/updates works better than wheezy-updates)

There is still a problem with an expired security certificate at Debian. Changing the system clock for a few minutes bypasses that.

We are in a bit of a bind with there not being a version of RTAI that works on a v4 Linux kernel.

Or, better:
sudo apt-get update -o Acquire::Check-Valid-Until=false
