It is possible for sure, but i do not remember any cases of those two as they are used for servers mostly and have a lot of services started at boot time. Having to install Linux and un install a lot of software to use it for something they where not intended is counter productive.Hello there,

alright, so what is the best working approach.
What is the best newest Linux to use and how to install linuxcnc?
I tried downloading the 2.7.14 version live CD and the one based on Debian 9. !st one doesn't complete the install (because a Debian 7 reo doesn't exist anymore and Debian 9 doesn't boot because it seems to mess up boot devices.
So what is recommended:
- Debian (Ubuntu even?) version/distro
- version of linuxcnc

here's what I found out.
linuxcnc 2.17.4 (or was it 2.4.17) wants to connect to a repo, and if it can't wants a "media change", a dvd with the repo. The repo doesn't exist anymore and i couldn't find the io.
The deian 9 one, based on Stretch, has a bug in the part that write the grub and initramdsk, because it uses the last of the disk device files it sees. So if you have something like /dev/sde, but you installed on something else (like /dev/sda) I tries to boot from /dev/sde.. and you get stuck in the ram disk. So I disconnected all otehr drives/devices, and that seemed to work.

I thought I had fixed that when I re-issued the .iso with the repositories switched to the archive. Are you using the link here? www.linuxcnc.org/downloads/
