Hi,
I like to try an RTAI version.
I have downloaded the LinuxCNC 2.8.0 Debian 7 Wheezy RTAI iso file from download page. It gave me thisI make a usb stick with dd command line. But the usb stick is not shown as bootable.
All of this is very strange.
Can you check the link and the 2.7.14 iso file ?

Sorry, it was my fault. RTAI iso is not for my computer but for old ones in 32 bits. It is explain in the documentation.
Installing RTAI on modern computers is for Linux specialists and I’m not a specialist. It needs to be compiled from sources.
Forgive.

linuxcnc.org/temp/
you need linux headers and linux image and linux modules and linuxcnc.
do not install other stuff from there. Might also need some dependencies.

That does seem very high.
There is a possibility that it could be an SMI issue.
What is the latency like with the preempt-rt kernel?

I have made a lot of test with the initial installation. The PC became unstable.
This morning, after resetting the PC and the SD, I made a clear installation of LCNC 2.7.15 with Debian 7 with only required adjustments on the OS. I'm waiting for the 2 ram DDR3 1866Mhz.
With this configuration I get 13700 max jitter.
I fond the good settings for LCNC adjusting times definitions. it's make me a long time to understand every ones With this settings I can move to the maximum speed of steppers motors (up to 12000mm/mn, 2400RPM)
Sometimes, at launch,I get latency messages but when it start properly LinuxCNC works for hours very nicely. I will talk about latency in the dedicated post.
I don't think trying more RTAI or new version of LCNC. The version I use make me please.
For me, the next step is to build the machine.

You can install LinuxCNC v 2.8.1 on that base OS and kernel.
There is no reason to stick on v2.7.x.
(LinuxCNC 2.9.x probably won't be supported on Wheezy)

- Can I switch from wheezy to buster directly?
- did I have to do something with the rt kernel?
- is there a risk that it affects the latency?

I have read the documentation . It seems not very difficult. Il will do it.You can install LinuxCNC v 2.8.1 on that base OS and kernel.
There is no reason to stick on v2.7.x.
I have take a look on Debian update process. Not very difficult. I have some questions about that :(LinuxCNC 2.9.x probably won't be supported on Wheezy)
