- Can I switch from wheezy to buster directly?

Not without changing the kernel. And if you do that you need a new version of RTAI and a version of LinuxCNC compiled against that.
And you seem to have already tried that, with very poor latency results?

- is there a risk that it affects the latency?

I think that you already showed that it does.
You could try running the preempt-rt LiveDVD image on your current hardware to see how Buster + preempt works on your hardware. This can be done "Live" ie, with no changes to the existing installations.

I think I will stay with rt-preempt. With a clean installation it give me good results.

I try latency test from the LinuxCNC 2.8 live CD. It gave me poor results. Every time I try to install it, Linux don’t boot. I’m not a specialist and it is very difficult for me to resolve that kind of problems without reinstalling from LinuxCNC 2.7 live CD.

Now I have a PC that work fine. I want to do only minor changes. I’m in a industrial case but a home hobbyist. When something works I don’t change it.

Finally I have update the OS and LinuxCNC. It wasn't easy for me but it was a good thing. I get the best latency than ever with this machine (see here ). LinuxCNC works perfectly (no latency messages).
Thanks andypugh for encourage me to do this.
