New Install - Linuxcnc hangs when started

I have an initial working install of linuxcnc with Mint 19.3, Mesa 7i76e, VistaCNC pendant and servos to tryout the system before upgrading a working Openbuilds CNC. I am building other linuxcnc builds ( like 'LinuxCNC 2.8.0 Debian 10 Buster PREEMPT-RT ISO') but can't get past linuxcnc hanging when selecting a sample configuration
Tried several installs (mint 19.3, mint 20) but all hang when starting linuxcnc right after clicking on any linuxcnc sim (i.e axis). If started in the terminal ($ linuxcnc), there are no error messages and can hit Ctrl-C to close the hung dialog.
If I copy the linuxcnc folder from my original install and select one of the configurations, linuxcnc starts and runs fine.
This was all in an effort to install a better gui like silver dragon, I tried to install the qtpyvcp dependencies, but gave up.
Instead following a installation guide using 'LinuxCNC 2.8.0 Debian 10 Buster PREEMPT-RT ISO'

Thanks for asking . . . never could get past this error, probably a permission's issue and me not following the installs to the letter.

I did install 5 or 6 more prebuilt configurations of Debian and Mint trying to get QtDragon or Probe Basic to run.
After several more days of messing around, I finally did get both to run. It took installing linux mint 19.1 from scratch, building the linux rt kernel , installing Qt5, troubleshooting all the missing dependencies and changing out the graphics card due to an Open GL driver issue.
My original Openbuilds configuration still runs in the new environment, moving servos and control by a Vista Pendant but only with the basic AXIS screen.
But now a new host of problems configurating QtDragon and ProbeBasic to run with a tandem y axis: errors like 'VCPwindow object has no attribute 'dro_axis_y2' and 'AXIS_0(MAX_VELOCITY) no such variable'.

At this point, I am abandoning this effort and will look at other solutions: Acorn, UCCNC or Mach4. I'll be the first to agree that they may/will have their own issues to resolve. I just really want to use the the Vista pendant or a similar mpg which my current cnc control software doesn't support.

Maybe in the future, there will be a turnkey with Mint 2x, Mesa 7i76e and Vista Pendant for the OpenBuilds CNC from the linuxcnc community.

Use Mint 19.3 with Mate or XFCE, install as per the "quick and easy" in the Install LinuxCNC section, use the script that PhillC made in the Install QTVCP section, then install QtPyVCP as per the github howto. That works without issues and it takes about half an hour total.
Just be sure to enable "partner" and "source" repositories in the "software sources" from the administration menu.
As for the pendant, i never used them, but chances are someone here made it work.
