Hi,
I tried to install the buster linuxcnc 2.8 image on my main computer at home, to test a new interface.
But I ran into trouble, I think it could have something to do with the hardware:
CPU: Ryzen 3700x
GPU: AMD 5700xt
Ram: 32gB DDR4

After booting it enda up with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner..
I also tried to install the newest debian 10 image with online packages. But this also doesn't boot up it stucks in the section "Started GNOME Display Manager"

I think it has something to do with my graphics card.. but how can I get Linuxcnc and debian 10 to run?
Best regards

Give this a try, it uses the non-free version of Debian 10 so it has drivers for a lot of hardware that the free version does not have, so might work.

I have a Ryzen 5 3500X with an RX480 on an Gigabyte Aorus Elite MB running Linux Mint 20 with Preempt-RT kernel and AMD proprietary drivers working properly ( just do not expect the same 3D graphic performance with the RT kernel as with the generic one, it is a lot lower )
The Mint howto is here, but beware that if you intend to do development work on the new GUI's like QTVCP or QtPyVCP you are better off using Mint 19.3 as the 20 uses Python3 for everything, making it nearly impossible to get the Python2 stuff to work.

Or if you want the Mint 19.3:

Hi,
Thank you this looks definitely more promising. I installed mint 19.3 as I want to use probe basic and customize it to my needs.

But I have problems with the graphics driver.. I can set the resolution only to 1024x768. On the AMD homepage there is no driver for Debian.

Those work on Mint 19. Might be better off using the open source ones if you intend to use the RT kernel all the time, otherwise you can switch the kernel at boot time holding the shift key down till the grub menu appears.

Hi,
Ok I installed the driver but it seems that this makes it worse...now the system does not boot any more and I get a fault..

Amdgpu: GCVM_L2_Protection_Fault_Status:0x00041F52

I can only boot in recovery mode

Im sorry i dont use Linux very often.. With Kernel 5.8 everything is working fine and im finally able to use probe basic gui :)

On my real machine i use older Hardware an dual core Opteron and 4gb DDR with an radeon X1950pro. Is it better to use Buster there or doesn't it matter and i can use mint also? For signal generation i use a Mesa card.

Use Mint 19.3 but with XFCE, it is easier on the hardware by quite a bit.
It is the same install procedure as for the Mate version.

Ok I'll give it a try.
On my computer now with Mate and the 5.8 kernel i have a ridiculously high jitter of 12900ms base thread. How is that even possible with this powerful hardware?

Has nothing to do with powerful hardware, it has to do with timings and C states of the processor and power saving stuff and interrupts and ......
And there is no need for base thread/period, only if using a parallel port.
