Hello Everyone,

New to the forum and Linuxcnc.

Despite feeling in-over-my-head, I'm pushing on and trying to get my system up and running with a fresh install of 2.8.0 on a Dell Precision 490. I downloaded the ISO and completed a checksum, flashed to a usb stick and booted successfully. I ran the Live option from the usb and I'm happy with the latency test.

When I attempt a full install, everything goes well (making full use of the HD and the guided partition options for a fresh install) until the actual installation section, which fails repeatedly after a couple of minutes. I have checked the logs and there seems to be a problem when copying files. I've done my best to interpret what's happening, but I think I'm kidding myself if I believe I understand what I'm looking at, or what to do next!

I have re downloaded the ISO and used different usb sticks, but get the sam problem. I also tried a different HD and got the same issue. Attached are the logs that install provides.... Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction?

Thanks very much.
Berto.

Well I'm definitely missing something...

I've tried linuxcnc-2.7.14-wheezy.ISO.... same result.

Linuxmint-20.1-mate-64bit.ISO... same result.

I also tried tried to install to a WD Passport External Drive... same result.

Starting to think my hardware is not compatible for some reason, but to be honest I'm just stabbing in the dark now.

last test. Try ubuntu without linuxcnc. If that doesn't work, think that your computer is in pain.

Disable UEFI and anything related to it in BIOS, or enable LEGACY.
In some cases CMS disable/enable works.

Update:

Completed full erase of HD using the Live Linuxmint 20.1 environment.
Pulled the CMOS battery and checked voltage... 2.15v. Replaced with new battery.
Reset BIOS to defaults, then disabled all necessary items as before.
Changed USB stick from 32gb micro SD in usb adapter TO... 2gb 'nonane' usb stick and flashed with linuxcnc-2.7.14-wheezy.iso
Boot from usb, pressed 'Tab' at boot menu and added 'acpi=off' to the command line.
Ran Graphical Install..... SUCCESSFULLY!

Booted into Debian and am currently running another latency test and deciding whether to upgrade to PREEMPT_RT or stick with this??? Thoughts...?

Thanks for the help guys. I was ready to throw in the towel.

preempt-rt isn't an upgrade as such. Though it is required to run Ethernet Mesa hardware.

Wheezy is particularly ancient, but it can run LinuxCNC 2.8.1

Should have good latency even with Preempt-RT, just be sure to disable hyperthreading in BIOS.

Curiosity got the better of me...

I tried installing Buster PREEMPT-RT the same usb stick that worked for the Wheezy install.

1st attempt - Didn't use the 'acpi=off' add-on to the boot command.... Failed install as before.
2nd attempt using 'acpi=off'... Successful install.

Latency tests were interesting:

Wheezy... 15500ns max jitter
Buster Preempt-RT... 55000ns max jitter

The BIOS is from 2008, the last time Dell pushed an update and the options seem limited to what's available these days. I don't see anything with regards to hyperthreading or UEFI. It's all quite basic.

The machine does have an Nvidia Quadro FX3500 and only 2GB RAM on the M/B.

Seems quite a jump in the latency test though? I wonder if it would be worth trying the Linuxmint route?

Thanks again for all the help!
