Update 2.8.1 -> 2.8.2 and RTAI 5.3

According to the release announcement LinuxCNC 2.8.2 comes with a new RTAI kernel.

Updating the machine (ubuntu precise 32bit based mint) did update LinuxCNC to 2.8.2 just fine but the kernel doesn't seem to have changed and still indicates 3.4-9-rtai-686-pae #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 3.4.55-4linuxcnc i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux.

Looking for a newer kernel version with apt-get also doesn't list anything newer than linux-image-3.4-9-rtai-686-pae.

What am I missing? Help would be appreciated.

The new RTAI is 64-bit only (RTAI 5.3.1) so is not compatible with your 32-bit Ubuntu.

You could update to the Kernel and RTAI version here: www.linuxcnc.org/dists/buster/base/binary-amd64/
But then I don't think that your current version of LinuxCNC would work. Or anything else much, for that matter.

I would actually suggest staying with what you have unless you have a compelling reason to switch, the 64-bit RTAI + Kernel is not quite as stable as the one you are currently running. (It is stable when running but sometimes locks when LinuxCNC is unloaded.)

All right. Could be worth to clarify that (RTAI update only 64 bit) in the release notes.

Thank you - especially for elaborating on the current stability of 64 bit RTAI. It would have been my next question... ;-)
