After installation, X fails to start, complains that it cannot open a framebuffer.

Graphics is onbard, Radeon HD 5880

I suspect the drivers for the graphics card are not being installed.

Help!!!!

At boot time, GRUB menu press E and add "nomodeset" after "splash", enter.
See if that makes it boot.

"splash" does not appear in the grub configuration. I added at the end of the line starting with "linux".

Booted same problem.

How flaky is the sid distribution from Debian and does it install with LinuxCNC ready to run?

The flakiness isn't so much in running. (It usually runs fine.) The flakiness is in the interaction of changing dependencies when ever an update or software installation is performed. You can never know if your system and all of it's parts will still work or even still be installed the next time you update.

Is sid the only distribution containing LinuxCNC?

If so, is this the right link to install: mirrors.edge.kernel.org/debian/dists/sid...ller-amd64/20210731/

Thanks,

Dale

No, it is also in Testing (Bookworm). Or was last time I checked (I have it installed as such in a VM.)

is there a relatively inexpensive graphics card know to work with LinuxCNC 2.8.2 out of the box?
