Disable secure boot in BIOS.

i remember to had similar Problem but not how i fix it. probably was it quite simple. reboot system and start text based installer. mount the root drive and try to install grub again.

On my newer HP the bios doesn't give an option for "UEFI". However that is the default setting. You must choose "Legacy" for the non UEFI boot. That said I've not experienced problems installing Linux on UEFI. (If it is a new enough distro.

Hummm, if I remember correctly the installer give you the choice of which disk to install grub. Maybe try with grub installed on the same disk that you've installed linuxcnc. Also, UEFI should not be a problem on HP 8100 as long as you have a recent bios version.
