New user here and new to CNC just installed LinuxCNC on Ubuntu 22.10 and after connecting up USB to a chinese board to just confirm software to board handshake works, I get the error "You are using a simulated-realtime version of LinuxCNC, so testing / tuning hardware is unavailable."

Thanks for any pointers!

1) LinuxCNC does not work over USB (it needs a low latency communication channel)
2) Probably a moot point because of 1), but: you need to install (and run) a real time kernel. Did you do that? What does 'uname -a' say?

Thank you for sharing that information.
My cheap amazon CNC came with an offline controller (linked below). The controller connects to the mainboard. Do you happen to know if I could swap out the offline controller and use that port on the mainboard to connect to connect to a LinuxPC (running real time kernel) serial port?

It's possible that your controller can be reflashed with the "Remora" firmware to make it work with LinuxCNC. (but if it connects with USB, then that can't work)
The linked page is not at all clear how the board communicates
