Hello,
There are several ways to obtain and install EMC2. The simplest seems to be using a Live CD.
This has worked great. However two of my machines (one running 8.04 and EMC2.3 , the other 8.04 and EMC2.4) are now at a shop that does not have an internet connection.
I would like to try 2.5 on these and to be able to update them from time to time. What is the best method to do this?

Rick,
You might try copying your dev directory to a USB stick then transfer that to the challenged computers to try a 2.5 RIP.
A tip here .

Ubuntu Lucid includes a utility that can create bootable USB sticks from an ISO CD image.
It is in the System Admin menu I think.
This is the approach I used to get EMC onto my new machine (No CD drive)

Andy,
That sounds like an interesting idea however I have had no luck with Lucid and EMC2. The first computer I loaded it on (which is fine with Hardy) failed the latency test terribly. Tried several fixes with no luck and went back to Hardy.

If you have a Lucid machine, you could make a Hardy boot-drive using the Hardy ISO.
I assume that the package can be installed on Hardy too, but I don't know what it is called.

Andy,
I do not have a Lucid machine right now, but I could put one together. I am hoping to find the solution to getting EMC2 to run on Lucid for me at some point anyway but there is only so much time... What I really wanted to do was have the stable version of EMC2 and 2.5 on the same machine. So I could try 2.5 and keep 2.3 or 2.4 running.
I did download the files and following the instructions for installing 2.5 i got as far as ..
$ cd src
$ ./autogen.sh
$ ./configure
At which point I receive the error "compiler cannot create executables"
Thanks,
Rick

Rick,
Did you install the build dependencies?

John,
Good call, I must have jumped over that (maybe it is time for new glasses). I thought that when I went to package manager and downloaded the files for emc dev I would have everything.
Right now when I configure I get...
checking for glib ... configure : error no -- required until somebody makes modbus optional
I will go to the shop and try now.
Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,
I wish I could take credit but cradek pointed that out when I asked on the IRC.
