up grade fresh install

Hi Im new to linux so please be gentle im not a technefobe  just old and slow  
i currently run  an asus FIA55-MLX-PLUS mother board with 8gig of ram  running Ubuntu linuxcnc 2.5.3 and i would like to upgrade 
I was thinking 2.8.4 buster as a fresh install my computer, is air gapped
any advise is greatly recieved  in plain english as im still coming to terms with the linux termanoligy

If the machine and PC are working properly, with no internet, i would not upgrade at all.
In case you want to:
-save the config folder (in 'home user_name emc2' folder most probably) to a USB stick.
-download the ISO of the version you want to test, boot from it in Live mode without installing
-copy the config folder from the USB to desktop or wherever
-open that folder, find the file with .ini at the end and right click on it
-choose 'open with > other application' and enter linuxcnc at the bottom, click enter
-if the config runs (might prompt for an update), all is good, install at will
You can skip all of the above if you are sure there is no special components or ATC or other strange stuff in use.

thanks it runs fine it does freeze and i have to reboot it and it is a little clunky on my other machine i run fluid nc . i know my verion of linuxcnc is about 10 years old a newer version would be a little more user friendly and smoother with a cleaner interface
