Downloaded the Ubuntu 8.04 live disk image, the md5sum
check OK, Burned CD OK.

Ubuntu boots from live CD and runs correctly every thing
works, passes latency test very well, Install opens and
appears to successfully install Ubuntu 8.04

Restart, with no CD in drive, nothing happens, Power
down restart, Dell Bios fires up, Grub launches, then
nothing just a blinking cursor.

Tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 every thing works right
except The system has lousy latency not usable.

My other older slower Dell computer worked fine with
Ubuntu 8.04 instalation was easy.

What could the problem be???

If you have not already take a look here..
wiki.linuxcnc.org/emcinfo.pl?TroubleShooting

Be sure to look at the display section.

Did you install 8.04 and 10.04 in the same partitions when you tried both?

I had Ubuntu delete the old partition and make a new one on each
Install attempt.

I tried an experiment I attempted to install an older OS, Win2000
It appeared to install normally but failed to boot from the HD just
like Ubuntu 8.04 failed.

I then installed Windows Vista, which then successfully booted
from the HD just like Ubuntu 10.04 did.

There is a clue here but I lack the understanding to figure it out.
However I suspect this is a BIOS problem. I checked the older
Dell which works correctly, it's BIOS is A11 (11/30/06) while
the new Dell BIOS is 1.1.5 (03/27/07). The two machines are
very similar hardware wise.

Perhaps if contact Dell and I am lucky they will help me.

So far no help from Dell as to any possible fix to get Ubuntu 8.04
to boot from the HD.

Perhaps a different tact, try and figure out why Ubuntu 10.04 has
such awful latency performance on this Dell more than 300,000 ns

While Ubuntu 8.04 yields latency checks of Less than 10,000 ns on
the very same machine.

Therefore I shall now post to the computer portion of this form.

On my Hardinge CHNC lathe I had to install Ubuntu 8.4.4 then install EMC2 to get a good working system with my Zotac motherboard...
