Hello all,
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 with EMC2 2.4.3 onto an old laptop that meet all the requirements. i know laptops aren't the best, but i needed to transport it for school and a laptop is easier to move then a desktop.
Anyway, the install was successful, Ubuntu seems to work perfectly, but whenever I try to start EMC2, it crashes and gives me an error report. I have tried with different configurations from the start-up screen, but the same thing happens.
The error suggest I write what it says in my question, so here it is:

I'm pretty new to Linux in general, so I can't make heads or tails of what the problem is, so if anyone could help me out, I would be forever grateful.
Thanks in advance,
Andrew

If your not really going to try and run a machine (and you should not from a laptop) install the pure simulator version.

And if you are brave and are going to try running a machine see this thread about the lapic:

I had read somewhere that a cnc machine should be run from a desktop instead of a laptop, but i didn't understand why. could you please explain it to me? is it even possible to run from a laptop?
i do plan to run a cnc machine, myself and a couple of friends are building the hardware side of it at school.

its possible to run from some laptops.
In general laptops have latency trouble that is hard (or impossible) to work around.

Laptops are not good candidates for EMC machine control because they usually have special hardware and low level software for power management that interferes with EMCs real time performance. For example, a 1 mS delay during a video playback while the laptop hardware/software checks its CPU temperature or battery charge state is undetectable, but if EMC is running a step motor a 1 mS delay will likely cause a stall, losing position and ruining the work...

CNC motion control needs to produce signals that are timed in an accurate and predictable way. In a coordinated move. all axes must move to the way points on time and synchronized. EMC2 uses a kernel patch that takes over from Linux and provides a realtime component to the operating system. This component is designed to give realtime tasks the resources they need to hit their marks every time. Unfortunately, there a few parts of the PC that can override the realtime system. Usually this is hardware. USB can be an issue this way. Laptops are usually a problem due to the hardware and software that handles the power saving features needed for running on a battery. If you can find and disable these features that interfere with realtime, the laptop should work okay. Since few laptops can be made to work properly, many here don't think it's worth bothering. Especially, since the machine one is trying to control is about as portable as a safe. Desktops that can run EMC2, with patience, can usually be found for very little cost, or if this is a school project, you may be able to get a donation.

I was able to install an older version of Ubuntu (8.04) with EMC2 2.3 from that live CD and now I can load the program with no problem. I will try upgrading EMC2 to 2.4 when I have the time.
Thank you all for the information on laptops, I will need to explore ways to increase my chances of success when I actually attach steppers and run a program.
