Installing from a USB Stick
help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

Updating 2.4.x without an internet connection.
Download the latest deb for 10.04 here:
linuxcnc.org/lucid/dists/lucid/emc2.4/binary-i386/
copy the deb to your remote computer and install with the package manager.

If you need features not in the current release you can get 2.5 here

buildbot.linuxcnc.org/

ok I figured it out duh. ill post so others can learn from my brain absence. you have to point to the deb file from the update manager.

so from the update manager click settings go to the 'other software' tab then add the files from johns page.

ok i took the plunge ...... i installed emc2.5.
all is working(almost all) put i have a question or two about the cycle timer.
when i pause the program, it resets the timer. is it suppose to work like that ?
and using file/properties, can i use that and cycle timer some way to get time remaining ?
like file/properties - cycle timer = time remaining.

It would be nice to include the debian repo somewhere in the docs, it took me 15 minutes to figure it out:
deb http://linuxcnc.org wheezy base 2.6-sim
or
deb http://linuxcnc.org wheezy base 2.6
or
deb http://linuxcnc.org wheezy base 2.7-rtai
or
deb http://linuxcnc.org wheezy base 2.7-uspace

together with the gpg key:
gpg --keyserver pgpkeys.mit.edu --recv-key 8F374FEF
    gpg -a --export 8F374FEF | sudo apt-key add -
