Open a terminal and run "sudo dmesg -wH" to monitor for EtherCAT errors.

Start your machine and post what it complains about.

I've started my own wiring diagram that I'll update. I'm posting it here so one can tell me if I do something wrong. Right now i've just draw the wiring for the drivers (just one but they are all on the same 36v 17A alimentation and wired the same way).

I'm not sure I fully understand the difference between ground and earth. As I understand it I need to connect the machine structure and the alimentation to the earth, and I need a common ground (not connected to the earth) for everything else (which I draw in black on the drawing). The common ground acting as a base voltage reference for all the electronic, and the earth is there for safety in case I have accidental high power connecting to the frame of the machine.

Does it seems right to you ?

Additionaly, I realize the Stamos plasma I wanted to buy doesn't have an arcOK signal build in. I know @tommylight told me it's possible to generate one with a reed relay. The other alternative is the Hynade Plasma, it has quite a lot of shipping cost to the EU. I'm not to sure which one to buy. Is the reed relay thing reliable and easy to set-up ?

Thank you for your answer. On the qtplasmac documentation it says to not try to configure it if the base machine isn't done. I understand it as you need all the wiring (with the THC) to be done before trying anything. But maybe I'm not understanding it well ? My question is, can I build a qtplamac config just to try my 3 axis (with a slaved motor for the Y, so 4 stepmotor YYXZ) without the THC and the plasma ? Since it's the first time I'm ding something like that I'd like to go step by step. I'm sorry I dont always understand your answer well because of the language.

edit : okay I found the answer there :

You can make a simple charge pump that will prevent spindle from running if no pulses are present on a set pin. It takes 2 capacitors, 1 or 2 resistors and a darlington transistor, so if you feel like giving it a go, i can draw a quick schematic, or just google " diy charge pump cnc" .

oh okay, it's a super old laptop, maybe that's why.

Thanks a lot tommylight!

This helps as I'll get news hardware that can go this gracefully.

Dangerous both ways, casue if PC fails somehow - vfd/spindle turns on..
lol, Pin17 relay on cheap parallel breakout.,
so to remedy
I power off vfd/dc power to CNC when not in use. Computers stay on.

When need to use CNC, vfd/dc power switched on, PC woken up,
cutting resumes (position never lost - so no re-homing).

fast + power economy

Ethercat installation from repositories - how to step by step

Category: EtherCAT

Hello !!Thanks for the detailed steps, I have installed ethercat and able to detect slaves. As I am totally new to this I am not able to start LCNC.I have followed steps of xml and hal file from youtube (attaching hal file and error for your reference)

I am aware that its the issue of xml file as I am using different driver (panasonic MBDLN25BE)
Can you please guide me what type of changes I need to do in xml file ?

Thanks and Regards,

If you have a Rpi4 give it a go.

If you have the choice between a 5 and a 4 go for the 5.

If you do go for the 5, I'd suggest against using the Rpi5 image, as much as Rodw has put into it there are some nice things missing, installing Linuxcnc & a RT kernel isn't that hard on a Raspios image.Actually building Linuxcnc on the RPi5 is pretty quick, if you need to go that way.

If you haven't got a Raspberry Pi on hand and space isn't a issue you'll get more bang for buck with SFF system.

8i20 problem with rotor homing?

HI PCW, thanks for replying so soon. I will try rotating the encoder and align the index with a magnetic zero.

I was under the impression that with the QI config, the offset will be measured using the index-latch after first aligning the rotor magnetically. But reading the man page it doesn't explicitly state that.

Yes sir both float and break away micro switches

OK, when you do a probe test make sure the ohmic led lights rather than the float led. If it is too quick to see which one lights then bypass the float switch.

I use the Ohmic test before I try a G-code to be sure the tip and metal are clean, maybe an OCD thing for me.

It is not OCD, that is what ohmic test was originally designed for.
