That seems interesting and warrants a bit more investigation, whenever i might have a bit of time.
I use Mate Desktop Environment mostly, but i do use XFCE on low end PC's and laptops, besides being a bit more snappy XFCE never seemed any better for latency.
Hansu has some good advice, some applications just do not run properly on different environments due to appearances and icon themes.
